Demo(n)s

Plethora: Middle Eastern cattle

17/08/07  ||  theProphet

This is yet another CD from the huge Lebanese grindcore scene. I know, I know, you are tired of this, but hey, I’ve been tired of the fucking Gothenburg melodic death sound since Anders Fridén, but you don’t hear me complaining (until now, and fuck me cause this is like my third review).

Some of you people might have read about these guys in Swedish Close-Up Magazine when they did an article about metal in Lebanon. The article and the cocky-ass bandmembers apparently refer to this as an EP, but since they are unsigned I put this one in the demo department, although I admit 11 tracks seems pretty hefty for a demo. Fuck it.

Onto the music then, and despite the many tracks this piece is actually just slightly above 20 minutes. I like this, however. I’ve seen a lot of bands that write short, fast songs cramming about 47 tracks on their releases because their penis envy forbids them to make albums shorter than 40 minutes. This totally destroys the purpose of short, fast songs and is REALLY FUCKING BORING.

When it comes to songwriting and performance, Plethora really has their shit together. The tracks shift between being really fast and heavy as a ton of bricks (or a ton of anything). The vocalist makes a real badass effort too, sounding wonderfully pissed off and desperate and good shit. But hey, what the fuck happens!? Suddenly there’s this other voice, I did some research and it turns out this is the drummer doing some vocal work. This is not good. Instead of sounding like an angry badass, this guys sounds like he’s being gang raped while he’s singing, either that, or taking a dump while being constipated. There’s definitely some rough anus work going on. At least he nails the desperation pretty good, and judging from this I’ll go with the gang rape option. In his defense, his drumming is kickass, he should stick to his sticks (har har), he plays some piano too.

Production-wise all is well too, not over polished but it doesn’t sound half assed either. I like.

A special mention to the lyrics, you can’t hear them, but a quick visit to the bands homepage gives me the feeling they are pretty funny. The song titles are pretty humorous too, not that song titles can be THAT funny but you get the point… To Plethora: please make lyrics public. (like they will be reading this anyway…)

To wrap up the longest demo review ever, I strongly suggest you check these guys out, they are actually giving away the “album” for free on their website. Horns up!
